The Wisdom of Geese

The Wisdom of GeeseWere you at this year’s QuickBooks Connect conference? Like every year, the experience was inspirational, as well as, educational. There was one point when Brad Smith, CEO of Intuit, was on the main stage and shared “The Wisdom of Geese”. I just loved this story and wanted to share his words with the rest of you.

Sometimes the best organizations to emulate are those from Mother Nature. Have you ever wondered why geese fly as a group in a “V” formation? By flying together, they create uplift for the birds to follow. When the geese in front tire, others move forward into the guiding positions so the original leaders can fall into the back of the formation to rest. When working this way as a group, the flock increases its flying range by 70% vs a bird that flies alone.

And when one goose gets sick or falls behind, two geese drop out of formation to follow it, to help and protect it, to stay close until it is able to rise up again and fly with the flock.

Using our talent and skills to work as one team, helping and encouraging each other, making sure no one is ever left alone  –  this is how we work toward a common goal. Together, we are stronger than we are apart.

Don’t you just love that? What does this story mean to you? How does it inspire you? Share you thoughts and comments below.
