What do you enjoy most about participating in #QBOchat each week?
I love being in a virtual room with other firm owners and the vendors who work with us. It recharges my batteries.
How did you find out about #QBOchat?
Wow – I’ve known about it for a long time, although I’ve only been joining in for the last year or so. Social media, probably.
What do you do?
I specialize in working with nonprofits – it’s actually why I became a ProAdvisor back in 2002.
I really want people to know where their money is. For nonprofits, this means being really clear on what money is restricted, and what is available for operations.
What are you most passionate about professionally?
I get really excited about nonprofit finance. I didn’t start out in accounting – I was a theatre and political science major in college, and I stopped taking math classes in high school as soon as they’d let me. But I GET this. It’s not math; it’s puzzles, and I tell people if I can understand it, so can they. I had someone tell me, “You make numbers sing!” and that completely rocked my day.
What topics interest you that you connect with others about?
I’m a knitter; I’ve committed to making each of my three boys a sweater once they’re twenty-one, and so far I’ve finished the first one. And I practice Bikram yoga – it’s the perfect exercise for the sort of lazy Type A personality. I love that I can go into the room and for 90 minutes all I have to do is breath and follow instructions.
What topic would you like to see in a future #QBOchat?
This isn’t QBO-related specifically, but my current challenge is all about going from being a solopreneur to having a team. Managing people, finding peers and mentors to help on the journey. It’s a struggle I share with some of my smaller clients. And I always love the chats about different tips and tricks. QBO is evolving so rapidly that it is easy to fall behind!
Anything else you’d like us to know?
Only that I’m incredibly honored to get to fill out the form, and that my one regret from QBConnect 2017 was that I still didn’t manage to meet Cathy Iconis in real life.
